From Sacred Temples to Java’s Most Iconic Volcanoes

Exploring East Java Culture and Volcanoes

This itinerary reveals the diversity of East Java culture and volcanoes, blending historic temples with spectacular volcanic landscapes.

Your journey begins in Yogyakarta, the cultural heart of Java. The city combines royal heritage, traditional crafts and vibrant street life.

After arriving, settle into a charming villa. Take time to relax in the garden or by the pool. Meanwhile, the atmosphere of the city slowly unfolds around you.

This first stage allows travellers to adapt gently to Java’s rhythm while discovering the warmth of Yogya’s hospitality.

Borobudur at Dawn and Rural Java

The next morning begins before sunrise. You travel to Dagi Hill, overlooking the Borobudur valley.

Here, breakfast is served in peaceful silence. As the sun rises, mist slowly lifts from the surrounding jungle.

Afterward, explore Borobudur, the largest Buddhist monument in the world. Your guide explains the meaning behind its terraces and carved stone stupas.

Later, visit Candi Rejo village, where rural life continues at a relaxed pace. Local crafts and agricultural traditions reveal a more intimate side of Java.

Prambanan and the Sultan’s Palace

Before leaving Yogyakarta, two essential cultural landmarks await.

First, explore Prambanan, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia. Its dramatic towers rise above the surrounding plains.

Then visit the Kraton, the Sultan’s Palace. This historic residence remains the cultural center of Yogyakarta.

Together, these sites illustrate the remarkable Hindu and Buddhist heritage that shaped Java.

Crossing Java by Train to Malang

Next, board a scenic train traveling east across Java. The journey is comfortable and smooth.

Along the way, wide windows reveal rice fields, villages and volcanic mountains.

Arriving in Malang, you discover one of Java’s most elegant towns. Colonial architecture, leafy boulevards and lively cafés give the city a relaxed charm.

Markets of Malang and Tea Plantations Toward Bromo

Begin the day exploring Malang’s colorful markets. Fruits, spices and flowers fill the stalls with vibrant colors.

Then continue toward Mount Bromo. The scenery changes gradually. Hills become steeper and tea plantations appear along the road.

Stopping at one of these estates offers a peaceful moment in Java’s countryside.

Mount Bromo Sunrise and Mahadikapura Waterfalls

Before dawn, travel toward the Mount Bromo viewpoint.

The short walk to the viewpoint is accessible to most travellers. Soon after, the sky begins to glow.

Sunrise over the Bromo caldera is unforgettable. Volcanic peaks emerge from the morning mist while Bromo releases gentle smoke.

Later, continue to the Mahadikapura waterfalls, hidden in lush vegetation. The cool atmosphere offers a refreshing contrast after the volcanic landscape.

Mount Ijen and Its Turquoise Crater Lake

Early the next morning, begin the ascent of Mount Ijen.

The trail climbs gradually through forested slopes. As daylight arrives, the turquoise crater lake becomes visible.

This surreal volcanic landscape is one of East Java’s most striking natural wonders.

After descending, return to your accommodation in Banyuwangi for a well-deserved rest.

Gombengsari Village and the Crossing to Bali

Your final stop in Java is Gombengsari village, a peaceful community known for coffee plantations.

Here, meet local farmers and explore traditional coffee production. The village atmosphere reflects the authentic rhythm of rural Java.

Finally, board the ferry crossing the Bali Strait. Soon, the island of Bali appears on the horizon.
